This film pulls its punches in a way that actually harms the story to a degree. At the same time, if you're going to adapt a novel that is basically porn for people who don't read porn, you don't go half measures. I am not in favor of the oversexualization of TV and film and I find it sad to see people acclaimed for such work when far better performances are done by people who keep their clothes on. If you're looking for porn, or even titillation, the film just doesn't work. Maybe it was intended to be so, as certainly some of the dialogue in this movie ("I'm 50 shades of f-ed up" someone actually says and when the male lead describes how angry he is by referencing a part of his anatomy I nearly fell on the floor laughing) might make you think you're watching a parody of a Fifty Shades movie. It's actually a better movie if you watch Fifty Shades of Grey as a comedy. Which Side of History?
